What to Do in a Plumbing Emergency — A Galway Homeowner's Guide

Plumbing emergencies have a habit of happening at the worst possible moments — a Sunday evening, in the middle of the night, or right before guests arrive. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can mean the difference between a manageable repair and serious water damage to your home.

Step 1: Turn Off the Water

Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink or where the water supply enters the house) and turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply. This immediately stops water flow to a burst pipe or leaking fitting.

If you can't find or turn the stopcock, your water meter (usually at the footpath outside your property) has a valve that can be turned off with a flat-head screwdriver.

Step 2: Turn Off the Boiler

If the issue involves a leaking boiler, cylinder, or heating pipe, switch off your boiler at the control panel and turn off the heating system. If you smell gas, do not touch any switches — leave the house and call Gas Networks Ireland on 1800 20 50 50.

Step 3: Open the Cold Taps

After shutting off the mains, open the cold taps throughout the house to drain any remaining water from the pipes. This reduces pressure on any damaged sections and clears water faster.

Step 4: Call Us

Galway Plumbing Services operates 24/7 for emergencies. Call us on the number above and we'll have a qualified plumber with you as quickly as possible, day or night.

While You Wait

Protect flooring and furniture by placing towels or buckets under any active leaks. Take photos of the damage for insurance purposes. If water has reached any electrical fittings or fuse boards, switch off the electricity at the main breaker and do not touch anything until the water is clear.
